The Hardest Part

Chicks seem to know when it is time to hatch. After about 19 to 21 days, they are fully developed, have absorbed most of the nutrient-rich yolk, and are running out of space inside the egg. They first break into the air pocket at the larger end of the egg and begin breathing. Then, they use a small, sharp egg tooth on their beak to start pipping, or breaking through the shell.

I think getting out of the egg is the hardest part. The tiny chicks must use almost all their strength to push and crack the shell. That is why hatching can take several hours. Chicks often stop to rest before they continue pushing.

The cracks in the shell do not always form an exact shape. Sometimes, a chick makes cracks around the shell in a circle, but other times, it may only make one small hole and stay there for an hour or longer. Every chick hatches in a slightly different way.

 

 

 

 

 

Fun Fact!

Did you know that female chickens can lay eggs without a male chicken? However, those eggs are not fertilized, so chicks cannot develop inside them.

Origami

Origami is a traditional Japanese art form made by folding paper — popular examples include paper planes, jumping frogs, and paper boats. Paper boats float thanks to buoyancy, and the air trapped inside their folded structure helps hold them together. Left in water, a typical paper boat will usually survive for only about 1–3 minutes before the paper becomes soggy and sinks.

The largest folded paper boat ever recorded measures 45 ft 8.4 in long, 13 ft 9.3 in wide, and 13 ft 7.3 in tall. It was created by Frank Bodin and the Daxlandiade Volunteers in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 2015 — built to celebrate the town's 300th anniversary.

The Physics of Buoyancy

  • ρ (rho) — the density of water

  • V — the volume of the submerged part of the boat

  • g — the acceleration due to gravity

Buoyancy is the upward force water exerts on any object placed in it. If that upward push is equal to or greater than the weight of the boat, the boat floats.

Interestingly, no one knows exactly who invented the paper boat — its exact origin remains a mystery to this day.

A membrane made of gel forms around rock. Then, since there is more water outside than inside the membrane, and so osmosis occurs. Water moves inside of the rock. Becuase there is so much water inside the membrane after a while, the membrane breaks. Then, since the ions are less dense than the water outside, it rises up. The Sodium Silicate in the solution reacts with the rock ions, which causes the solid to form. This is called precipitation.

We made slime today, but I wanted to know the science behind it. 
Glue has something called polyvinyl alcohol, aka PVA. PVA is also found in peel off face masks, and you can make slime with them instead of glue. 
Slime is basically polymers, that is molecules made by linking together chains of smaller parts. 
Borax dissolved in water has borate ions, which forms Hydrogen bonds with the OH groups in the PVA in the glue. This forms the polymer: slime. 
Adding more borax makes the slime harder, and this is because more links are made, and so the polymer is stiffer. 
We made slime with different amounts of borax solution, and the more borax solution, the harder the slime was. That is the science behind slime.

Self Hygiene Guardians- Glo Germ Experiment

It's crazy to think that only 5% of the people in the entire world wash their hands with the correct steps even though hands are the most common way to spread germs!  With this experiment, kids are able to see "germs" under UV light and understand the importance of hand washing and hygiene.

Solar Powered Mini Race

During the NorthWest Innolab Summer Camp, the kids used solar powered miniature cars to race each other! Not only was this a valuable lesson towards future sustainability, but also a fun competition. Solar panels work by absorbing energy from the sun which creates an electrical charge and allows electricity to flow.

The race featured a racing track created from recycled wood and designed by the kids and staff/volunteers! Our main theme for this was the importance of our Earth and environment and how we should be working to save it
